Historical significance:
Weston Villa
\'Weston Villa\' is a pretty mid-Victorian-style house situated in the area of George Street formerly known as \"The Mall\". The Lime trees on this part of the street, which are older than the house itself, were planted for George, third Earl of Kingston, after whom the street was named. George was the builder of Mitchelstown Castle, which was the last castellated House in Ireland until it was looted and burned during the Civil War in 1922.
The entire town was built by Robert, the second earl, and his son George, the third earl, between 1776 and 1825. They planned George Street as the premier residential street of the town with views closed off by King Square and Kingston College at its northern end, and Saint Georges Church on the southern end. At That period, 100,000 acre (40,000 hectares) Kingston Estate was one of the largest in Ireland.
\'Weston Villa\' was built as an estate house, sometime after 1850. On 26th December 1874, it was leased by Anna, Dowager Countess of Kingston (wife of the fifth Earl), to George Montgomery, Esquire, of Killee House. The Montgomerys, who were land lords of around 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) near Mitchelstown. The family claimed as their cousin, Britians most famous World War 11 commander, Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein KG, GCB, DSO, PC, DL.
The Annual rent of \'Weston Villa\' in 1876 was fixed at a very modest five shillings. Under the lease, George Mongomery, who was also a magistrate in the local courts, was required to keep the house covered by fire insurance, and was required to present a copy of the policy to the estate agent every year. Unusually for the time, all houses in Mitchelstown were slated, which was partly to make the town look prosperous but also to ensure that the risk of fire spreading from one house to another was kept to a minimum. Montgomery was also required to keep the house in good repair, well painted, clean and tidy at all times.
The property passed into the hands of the current owners in the 1960\'s. It is one of the more elegant looking houses of the older part of the town, within a couple of minutes walking distance of Kings square. Set as it still is in the elegance of a particular lovely part of the historic Georgian town.
